Communication and Culture

In my opinion, cultural differences cause everyday relationships hard to have effective communication. I communicate differently with different people, to my friends, I give hugs, kiss, smiles, and different facial expressions and to strangers, I often say hello or hi. Every situation cause for a different perspective because it may be the language, tradition, or a world issue that causes a lack of communication between the two. I believe that people communicate differently because of cultural differences and things that are related. I am not able to communicate to someone about the presidential election if they are not aware of what is going on or they speak the same language. Communicate is important but can be very challenging when there are barriers. We communicate with those that we feel comfortable around as well. When communicating we must learn culture rules about communication.

  1. Debra,

I agree with you that we communicate very differently with different groups of people. I find that those I know well and trust I am more open and honest with then those that I do not know or trust. I think this is much the same with everyone! I would not be able to converse with you about the presidential election as I am not very politically versed. My husband tells me all I need to know and I rely on him for information about that. Cultural rules are very important to communicating and is crucial to know about when communication styles are so different!

  2. Hello Debra,

The insights that you gave on this topic was very informative. Culture does play a role in the way that we communicate with others. It is true my communication style with my husband differs from other males in my life; and my personal contacts communication styles differ from those of my professional contacts.

    Good Job!

  3. Hi Debra,

It is true that we usually react differently depending on the degree to which we know someone. We also taylor our styles depending on culture and personality. For instance; many of my Hispanic friends are affectionate as the they greet me with a hug and a kiss. However, I have other friends who would think it odd if I greeted them with such affection. Cultures speak in myriad ways.
